No Name-Calling Week Creative Expression Contest for Students
Oct 24, 2005
Entry Deadline Extended: Entries Must Be Postmarked By December 9, 2005
What?
No Name-Calling Week (January 23 – 27, 2006) is a week of educational activities aimed at stopping name-calling and verbal bullying in schools. The Creative Expression Contest for Students is an opportunity for students to submit essays, poetry, music, original artwork, or other pieces that convey their experiences and feelings about name-calling, and their ideas for putting a stop to bullying in their schools and communities.
Who?
This contest is open to all students, preferably in grades 5-8, though entries from students one to two years younger or older will be accepted. Only U.S. residents are eligible to apply.
When?
All entries must be postmarked by Friday, December 9, 2005. Winners will be notified by telephone or mail in January 2006.
There will be up to 3 winners, whose work will be featured here on www.NoNameCallingWeek.org. Recognition will be given to additional entries of merit. Prizes will include:
- Grand Prize: A school visit during No Name-Calling Week from James Howe, popular author of The Misfits, Bunnicula, and The Watcher, (approximate value: $2,500) and a $150 award
- 2nd Prize: A set of books from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing (approximate retail value: $150) and a $100 award
- 3rd Prize: A set of books from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing (approximate retail value: $150) and a $50 award
- All Winners: A No Name-Calling Week project kit for student’s school (including curriculum guide, video, copy of The Misfits, posters and stickers; approximate retail value: $130)
How?
- If you are submitting an essay, poem, or other type of writing, it must be under 2,000 words, in English (or include an English translation of the original work), and typed in 12-point font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins.
- If you are submitting artwork, please send the original art along with a photo of the piece. If possible, please also e-mail a graphic file (jpg or gif) with the artwork to contest@nonamecallingweek.org.
- If you are submitting music, please include a CD recording and a copy of the lyrics (include an English translation if the lyrics are in another language), that is typed in 12-point font and double-spaced with 1-inch margins
Your entry should address your personal experiences, observations and feelings about name-calling and verbal bullying, and/or your ideas for addressing this problem in your school or community. A teacher, guidance counselor, family member or other adult may help you to develop your piece, though the actual content should be your own.
How will your entry be judged?
Your entry will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for the following qualities, depending upon the format of your entry:
- Well thought out pieces that clearly address the topic
- Depth of feeling about the subject
- Originality and imagination
- Eloquence and style
- Written work that is clear, articulate and logically organized
- Written work that is carefully proofread
Entries must be the original, sole, and unpublished work of the student and only one piece per student may be submitted. All written work in languages other than English must be accompanied by an English translation. All entries become the property of the No Name-Calling Week project and will not be returned.
