"The Troubled Child’s Prayer" - Poem By Jamie Fisher, Age 13 Pine Ridge Middle School Naples, FL
Jan 06, 2006
You can jeer at me and taunt me
Whistle insults from behind
Or toggle my seat and yank on my hair
‘Til teardrops smite me blind
And if you’re feeling ornery
You can mock me with your gangs
Until I’ve wrapped myself into a corner
Nursing wounds left from your fangs;
But if you chance upon my friends
I swear you’ll plead and bay
Should you ever consider giving them grief-
I swear you’ll rue that day.
You can call me GRAMPA
Since chemotherapy snatched my hair
Or call me HIDEOUS for my zits:
Watch me, I won’t care.
You can snicker because I’ve lost a limb
Or imitate my squeaking voice
And mock the ragged shirts I wear
As if I had a choice.
Yes, I have dealt with bullies before
And all these things I can abide
But don’t you dare call me one of you
‘Cause I still have my pride.
