Once upon a time, there was a lonely beaver that lived in a den in a lake. Next door there was a family of beavers and all of them were cruel to each other and bullies to everyone else.

One day the lonely beaver came across an egg. She brought it into her den and she waited and waited for the egg to hatch. In the springtime the egg started to shake. The lonely beaver noticed that the egg started to crack. Inside the egg was a very strange beaver. It had a flat beaver tail, webbed toes on its feet, and a break. But the beaver loved him. She named him Bob.

A few weeks later the lonely beaver told Bob to go play with the other beavers who were playing Marco Polo in the lake. Bob swam out to the other beavers and asked if he could play. The other beavers laughed at Bob and called him “duck mouth.” Bob swam back to his den and the lonely beaver. The lonely beaver gave Bob a hug and asked what had happened. Bob cried, “They called me duck mouth!” “It’s all right,” said the lonely beaver to Bob.

The next day Bob went out to play Marco Polo with the other beavers. The biggest beaver started to chase Bob across the lake, down a river, and through a stream until they were both lost. When the big beaver knew he was lost he started to make his tail flap up and down because he was afraid. Bob said, “Follow me, I’ll find our way home.” They went to a big lake and they saw fish charging toward them! They were piranhas! The big beaver and Bob started to swim quickly away but Bob wasn’t as fast as the big beaver and the fish began to nibble on him. Bob started to kick at them with his hind feet. Then spurs came out of his feet and started jabbing poison into the fish to scare them away. The fish saw what happened to the first piranha and started swimming the other way.

The big beaver saw what happened and knew that Bob was not a beaver. Soon, Bob and the big beaver went into the woods looking for directions home. They came across a wise owl. Bob asked the wise owl, “Where is our beaver home?” The wise owl replied, “Bob, you are not a beaver, you are a duck-billed platypus. They live near the lake in a muddy den.” Bob was stunned.

Bob and the big beaver walked back to the lake and found the muddy den that was the home of the platypuses. They went inside and met Bob’s real family. The other platypuses saw the big beaver and started to laugh and call him “bucktooth.” Bob said, “Stop calling him names!” The big beaver realized that Bob was a good friend.

Later they all traveled back up the stream through the river, and up to the lake to the lonely beaver’s home. Bob and his new family asked the lonely beaver if she wanted to live with the platypuses. She was so happy and she would never be lonely again! And, the big beaver learned not to call other people names.
