2007 Winner of the School or School District Contest (Grades 5-8)

This year's Creative Expression Contest contained a new entry category designed for schools or school districts serving grades 5-8 that plan to celebrate No Name-Calling Week in January of 2007. Schools or school districts entering the contest submitted a proposal that addressed the question 'What role will No Name-Calling Week 2007 play in our school or school district?'

Our Grand Prize Winner for the School or School District Entry (Grades 5-8) category for this year is Northgate Middle School, located in the North Kansas City School District in Kansas City, Missouri. Northgate Middle School demonstrated in their entry extensive plans to carry out school-wide activities around issues of name-calling and respect over the span of a six-week period. Included in their proposal is a Peer Leaders/Peer Mediation program, a door-decorating contest around the theme of name-calling, and a library display on inclusiveness, among other things.

As their prize, Northgate Middle School will receive a visit from James Howe, author of the book The Misfits (the novel on which No Name-Calling Week is based) during No Name-Calling Week 2007 (January 22-26).
